Our Story

Aspiring for excellence

The Montserrat Aspirers is a body of talented and dedicated individuals who are committed to fostering education, uplifting the community, and celebrating the culture of Montserrat and other Caribbean islands. A stalwart of the greater Boston community, The Montserrat Aspirers were founded in 1974 by a group of young Montserratians who aspired for educational excellence. The mission has since evolved to include establishing a firm foundation in the Boston area and creating pathways for cultural awareness and preservation.

In an effort to advance the organization, The Aspirers purchased a building in the heart of the Four Corners neighborhood of Dorchester, Massachusetts. After years of hard work, the Aspirers Community Centre was unveiled in June of 1994 and the dedication of the building's basement was held on Sunday, October 19, 1997. With over 50 years of service, The MAI continues to serve as a multifunctional cornerstone of the Boston community and Caribbean diaspora. Today, the organization remains dedicated to enriching lives and strengthening connections within the city of Boston and Caribbean communities.

Montserrat
The Emerald Isle of the Caribbean

About Montserrat

The Emerald Isle of Montserrat is 25 miles of lush greenery, friendly islanders, a rich culture and an even richer history. Discovered by Christopher Columbus in 1493, this vibrant volcanic island became a gem of blended culture and tradition with influence from indigenous Indians, enslaved Africans, and Irish settlers. As a British overseas territory in the Caribbean, Montserrat is home to roughly 5,000 people and a larger diaspora community in the United Kingdom, the United States and across the Caribbean. The island of Montserrat is a popular destination throughout the year, but specifically during Christmas and St. Patrick's Festival seasons. Montserrat is the only country, independent of Ireland, that observes the St. Patrick's holiday. The day celebrates our blended heritage, while paying homage to the heroic participants of the St. Patrick's Day Rebellion of March 17, 1768.
